Doha has transformed itself into a major global crossroads over the last decade. Hamad International Airport (DOH) is the centerpiece of this transformation, offering travelers a seamless and luxurious experience that reflects Qatar's modern identity. From the moment you land, the blend of traditional Qatari hospitality and futuristic architectural design is evident in every detail.

The airport is conveniently close to the city, making even relatively short layovers an opportunity to see the sights. Whether you choose to wander through the airport's lush indoor garden known as The Orchard or venture out to the historic Souq Waqif, Doha provides a memorable and efficient interlude to any long-haul journey. The facility is designed to be intuitive, with clear signage and world-class amenities at every turn.

01

Stay or go? The verdict

Stay airside

Hamad International is consistently ranked among the world's best airports for a reason. The facilities are exceptional, ranging from the quiet zones and sleep pods to the massive Orchard indoor tropical garden. You can easily fill several hours simply by exploring the public art installations, enjoying high-end dining, or relaxing in one of the many award-winning lounges.

Short city visit

With 6 to 8 hours, you can easily reach the city center via the efficient Doha Metro. A stroll along the waterfront Corniche or an exploration of the traditional Souq Waqif is very manageable and provides a great taste of the local culture without the stress of long travel times back to the terminal.

Longer stopover

A full day allows for a deep dive into Qatari culture and modern luxury. You can visit the Museum of Islamic Art, explore the futuristic Msheireb Downtown district, and even take a short desert safari if your schedule permits. The city is compact and well-organized, making it one of the easiest places in the world to enjoy a 24-hour stopover.

02

Getting into the city

The Doha Metro Red Line is the easiest and most sustainable way to travel. It connects the airport directly to central areas like Msheireb, Souq Waqif, and West Bay. The trains are modern, driverless, and offer a Gold Class for those seeking extra comfort.

Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are readily available outside the arrivals hall. The drive to the city usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis are metered and generally very reliable, with drivers who usually speak excellent English.

Many local airlines and the national tourism board offer organized stopover tours for transit passengers. These can be a stress-free way to see the city's highlights without worrying about transport logistics or missing your flight.

03

Entry and transit basics

Qatar offers visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival for citizens of many countries, making it one of the most open countries in the Middle East. The immigration process is generally a straightforward and quick experience at the dedicated counters.

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of entry. Having a copy of your onward ticket and hotel booking (if staying overnight) will help speed up the process. Digital systems are increasingly used to streamline the flow of passengers.

The airport is very efficient, but during peak transit times in the early morning or late evening, immigration lines can grow. Allow extra time if you are arriving during these busy windows to ensure you have enough time to explore the city and return comfortably.

Rules change - always check the official government or embassy website before you travel.

04

If you have 6 hours

Stay airside and visit The Orchard, a beautiful indoor garden with hundreds of plants and trees situated under a massive glass roof.

Check out the iconic Giant Teddy Bear art installation by Urs Fischer and explore the surrounding high-end retail area in the main terminal hub.

Relax in one of the many quiet rooms or use the fitness center and swimming pool located within the airport for a small fee.

Enjoy a meal at one of the diverse dining outlets, ranging from quick snacks to sit-down international cuisine.

Enjoy a traditional Qatari lunch in the Souq before taking a taxi or the Metro back to the terminal, allowing plenty of time for security.

06

Spend the morning at Katara Cultural Village, exploring the open-air theaters, galleries, and beautiful beachfront.

In the afternoon, head to The Pearl-Qatar, a man-made island, for upscale dining and a stroll along the Porto Arabia marina.

If you have enough time and energy, a half-day desert tour to the Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid) is a classic Qatari experience that offers a complete change of pace from the city.

End your evening with dinner at one of the rooftop restaurants in West Bay before heading back to the airport for your flight.
