Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) is the busiest hub in East Africa, a major crossroads for travelers heading to safari plains or coastal beaches. The airport has undergone significant renovations, offering improved facilities and a more streamlined experience for passengers.

Nairobi is unique: a modern metropolis that borders a vast national park where lions and rhinos roam within sight of skyscrapers. For the layover traveler, this offers a rare chance to see African wildlife on a short trip. However, the city's legendary traffic is a major factor to consider for any excursion.

01

Stay or go? The verdict

Stay airside

Facilities at NBO are functional but can be limited for long stays. Lounges offer a respite from the main concourses, which can get crowded during late-night peaks.

Short city visit

A 7 to 9 hour layover is the minimum to visit the Nairobi National Park or the Giraffe Centre. The new Expressway has significantly reduced travel times to the center.

Longer stopover

A 24-hour stopover is the best way to see the city. You can combine a game drive with a visit to the elephant orphanage and a high-quality dinner in Karen.

02

Getting into the city

Jomo Kenyatta is located about 15 kilometers from the city center. The recent completion of the Nairobi Expressway has made the trip much faster and more predictable.

  • Authorized Taxis: Available outside arrivals. It is best to agree on a price before starting, though many now use apps.
  • Ride-Hailing: Uber and Bolt are widely used and provide reliable pricing for visitors. Drivers pick up at designated points.
  • Private Shuttles: Many safari operators and hotels offer transfers, which can be pre-booked for peace of mind.
  • Public Matatus: Very cheap but not recommended for travelers with luggage or on a tight schedule.

03

Entry and transit basics

Most visitors require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), which must be applied for online before your flight. This applies even for a short layover where you leave the airport.

Immigration queues can vary and are often longest in the early morning. Once through, you will collect bags and pass through customs. The airport has multiple terminals, so ensure you know your departure point.

Rules change - always check the official government or embassy website before you travel.

04

If you have 6 hours

With six hours, leaving the airport is risky. The Nairobi National Park entrance is close, but you would only have time for a very brief visit.

A safer bet is visiting one of the nearby airport hotels, such as the Four Points by Sheraton within the complex. These offer excellent dining and rooftops with views.

If staying in the terminal, use the lounges. They offer a more comfortable environment than public seating, with better access to power and snacks.

If you have 12 hours

The Urban Safari

A twelve-hour layover is ideal for wildlife. Start early with a half-day game drive in Nairobi National Park, seeing wild animals against a backdrop of city buildings.

  • David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust: Visit the elephant orphanage, typically open at midday. You must book this well in advance.
  • Giraffe Centre: Head to Karen to feed endangered Rothschild giraffes from a raised platform. It is a quick and interactive experience.
  • Lunch in Karen: This suburb offers beautiful garden restaurants. Try local Kenyan dishes or international fusion.

After lunch, visit the Kazuri Beads workshop before heading back. Aim to be at NBO three hours before your flight to account for security checks.

06

If you have 24 hours

A 24-hour stay allows you to experience both wildlife and urban culture. Stay in Karen or Westlands for a range of quality hotels and dining.

Wildlife and Westlands

Spend your first afternoon at the Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick Trust. In the evening, head to Westlands for dinner. Nairobi has a thriving culinary scene with excellent Indian and Ethiopian options.

On your second day, start with an early game drive. Following the drive, visit the Bomas of Kenya to see traditional dances and homesteads from various tribes.

Before heading back, stop at a local market for Kenyan tea or coffee. The Maasai Market is great for souvenirs, but be prepared to bargain.

07

Staying airside

International terminals have been improved but remain functional. Airside, you will find a selection of duty-free shops, though variety is less than at major global hubs.

  • Lounges: The Kenya Airways lounges are highlights, offering decent food, drinks, and showers for eligible passengers.
  • Dining: Options include several cafes and bars. For a substantial meal, airport hotels just outside the terminal are often better.
  • Shopping: Look for shops selling Kenyan coffee, tea, and local handicrafts like wood carvings.

08

Where to eat

Nyama Choma

Succulent roasted meat, usually goat or beef, served with kachumbari and ugali.

Ugali

A dense, porridge-like dish made from maize flour. It is the staple starch used to scoop up meats and vegetables.

Samosas

Reflecting Indian influence, these fried pastries are filled with spiced meat and are a popular local snack.

Kenyan Tea and Coffee

Kenya produces world-class tea and coffee. Try a chai brewed with milk and sugar for an authentic experience.
