Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) is the primary international gateway to Taiwan, located about 40 kilometers from the capital. It is a major transit hub for transpacific flights, offering excellent facilities for travelers. The city of Taipei itself is a vibrant mix of traditional heritage and high-tech innovation, famous for its welcoming atmosphere and incredible food scene.
With the arrival of the Airport MRT, visiting the city during a layover has become remarkably easy. Whether you want to see the iconic Taipei 101, explore the narrow alleys of a historic district, or simply eat your way through a night market, Taipei provides a perfect urban escape. Even a short visit reveals why this island is known for its hospitality and diverse cultural landscape.
01
Stay or go? The verdict
Stay airside
Staying airside at TPE is comfortable. The airport is known for its thematic boarding gates and numerous free rest areas. If your layover is under six hours, staying in the terminal is the safest bet to avoid the stress of transit times and immigration queues.Short city visit
A layover of seven to ten hours is ideal for a quick city trip. The Express MRT reaches Taipei Main Station in 35 to 40 minutes, placing you within reach of historic sites like Ximending or Longshan Temple. It is enough time for a solid meal and a bit of sightseeing.Longer stopover
A 24-hour stopover is highly recommended to fully appreciate Taipei. This allows you to explore multiple districts, visit the National Palace Museum, and experience the legendary night market culture at a more relaxed pace.02
Getting into the city
Taoyuan Airport MRT
The Airport MRT is the fastest way into town. The purple Express trains take about 35 to 40 minutes to reach Taipei Main Station, while the blue Commuter trains take longer as they stop at every station. Trains run frequently throughout the day, and you can pay using a single-trip token or an EasyCard.
Taxis and Buses
Taxis are available 24/7 and take about 40 to 60 minutes to reach central Taipei. They are convenient but more expensive than the train. Buses like the 1819 also run to the city center and are a good option for budget travelers or those arriving late at night when the MRT is closed.
Regardless of your choice, remember to factor in potential traffic when taking road transport, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
03
Entry and transit basics
Many nationalities enjoy visa-free entry for short stays. You will need to complete an arrival card, which can be done at the airport or online in advance. Keep your onward flight information ready, as immigration officers may ask to see proof of your departure.
Immigration queues can vary significantly, so allow at least 60 to 90 minutes to clear the airport upon arrival. On your return, leave plenty of time for security and potential exit checks, particularly during peak travel seasons.
Rules change - always check the official government or embassy website before you travel.
04
If you have 6 hours
Six hours is generally too short to comfortably visit the city center. Instead, explore the thematic gates at TPE, which feature everything from tea culture to local art. There are also free shower facilities and comfortable lounges available for a fee or through membership programs.
If you really want to leave, consider taking the MRT just a few stops to the Gloria Outlets for a bit of shopping and local dining. This keeps you close to the airport and reduces the risk of missing your connection due to transit delays.

05
If you have 12 hours
With twelve hours, take the Express MRT to Taipei Main Station. Start your tour at Ximending, a lively pedestrian area perfect for people-watching and trying street food like flour-rice noodles. It is one of the city's most colorful and energetic neighborhoods.
Next, take a short metro ride to Longshan Temple to see one of the city's most beautiful religious sites. Afterward, head toward the Taipei 101 area for a look at the skyline. You can browse the high-end shops or simply enjoy the modern architecture before catching the MRT back to the airport.
06
If you have 24 hours
A full day allows for a deep dive into Taipei. Spend your morning at the National Palace Museum, which houses an incredible collection of Chinese art and artifacts. For lunch, find a local spot for beef noodle soup or braised pork rice.
In the afternoon, head to the Beitou district for a relaxing hot spring experience, or take a hike up Elephant Mountain for a classic view of the city. As night falls, visit a major night market like Shilin or Raohe. These markets are the heartbeat of Taipei, offering an endless array of snacks and a vibrant local atmosphere. Stay overnight near the main station for easy transit the following morning.
